This exhibition presents for the first time in Austria a body of works that shows clearly how Pierre Bismuth uses the same method in manipulating diverse materials. Pierre Bismuth creates unexpected shifts in the everyday meaning of things in order to provoke a change in perceptual habits, thus opening the space for an understanding of the world beyond its constructed meaning. The immediate accessibility of the materials employed by the artist proves to be a kind of decoy or lure, which eventually leads the spectator to distance him or herself from the usual network of significations and implications in which they are embedded. In this sense Pierre Bismuth never tries to add new meanings to the objects that he manipulates, but aims simply to neutralize their initial meaning and thereby delay the act of understanding. His art is above all one of “suspension“ and is tweaking the processes of memory and cultural interpretation in fresh and funny ways.

Bei seiner ersten Einzelausstellung in Österreich zeigen wir eine Reihe von Arbeiten, die klar demonstrieren, wie Pierre Bismuth seine Methodik anwendet, um verschiedenartige Materialien zu manipulieren:
er erzeugt unerwartete Verschiebungen der alltäglichen Bedeutung von Dingen, provoziert dadurch eine Veränderung der Wahrnehmungsgewohnheiten und schafft so Raum für ein Verständnis des Funktionierens unserer Welt auch hinter ihren konstruierten Bedeutungen.

Der durch den Künstler herbeigeführte unmittelbare Zugang zu seinen Materialien erweist sich als eine Art Lockvogel oder Köder, der den Betrachter schließlich dazu bewegt, sich selbst vom herkömmlichen Netzwerk an Gültigkeiten und Implikationen, in denen er verankert ist, zu lösen. In diesem Sinn ist es zu verstehen, daß Pierre Bismuth den manipulierten Objekten nicht neue Bedeutungen geben möchte. Er neutralisiert deren anfängliche Bedeutung vorerst nur, um so den Vorgang des Verstehens hinauszuzögern, anzuhalten. Seine Kunst ist daher vor allem eine der Suspension.
