For Abdessemed, a union „until death do us part“ is inaccurate since his work is a bond created at the brink of death. This theme is clearly not uncharted artistic ground, but Abdessemed’s engagement with such provocative subject matter is unlike any other artist working in France or elsewhere.
Perhaps more enticing for feline viewers than human museum-goers, Abdessemed’s video, Birth of Love, is a dual metaphor for disgust and tastiness. The close-up shot of a cat eating a mouse is a concise illustration of the nature’s food chain staged on the urban street. The sad story of the rodent that was stalked, hunted and killed is also the twinned tale of the happy cat that eats for another day. Recorded not far from the artist’s studio, Abdessemed reminds the viewer that the shadow play of life and death, predator and prey, is never far out of sight and mind.“

ORIENT FOR GLOBAL BORDELO
Da Jimmie Durham mich und meine kleine Tochter Ksu eingeladen hat, zur Eröffnung seiner Ausstellung bei Christine König zu kommen, vor cirka 2 Jahren ... traf ich beim Abendessen einen Freund ... Christine fragte ihn, wo er denn wohne ... er antwortete „Hotel Orient“ ... sie erwiderte ihm „oh, das ist doch ziemlich teuer“ ... er antwortete ihr darauf: „aber die Mädchen dort sind sehr intellektuell...“, sie wiederum „ja, das ist wahr, sie lesen James Joyce“.
Zwei Jahre später bot Christine mir eine Einzelausstellung in der Galerie an... Ich sagte: „ja, mit Vergnügen ... in welche Richtung gehen wir ... was machen wir...?“
Ausgehend von unserem Gespräch, es als Fügung nehmend, entschied ich mich, die Prostituierten in mein Ausstellungsprojekt einzugliedern. Sie sollten in ihrer Handschrift einen Roman ihrer Wahl auf irgendeinem Papier oder Heft kopieren, wie auch immer sie das machen wollten... Christine sagte mir: „diese Zeit haben wir nicht“...
Ich habe immer schon gedacht, dass es für das Leben fast keine Zeit gibt...
Keine Angst ... hier handelt es sich nicht um Dinge, die Beziehungen/Liaisons zum Thema haben ... es sind Manuskripte, welche wir auch unseren Kindern geben können.

Lorsque Jimmie Durham m’invita avec ma fille Ksu à son expo à Vienne chez Christine Koenig il y a environ deux ans… je rencontrai au dîner un ami… Christine lui demanda où il était hébergé… il répondit « hotel orient »… elle lui dit « oh c’est cher… ».. il lui répliqua : « mais les filles sont très intellectuelles… » elle lui répondit « oui c’est vrai elles lisent du james joyce »
Deux ans plus tard Christine me propose un solo show … j’ai dit : « oui avec plaisir… où allons nous… que faisons nous…? »
Dans cette trame de hasard je demande à ces prostituées de s’associer à mon projet et de recopier à la main le roman de leur choix sur n’importe quelle sorte de papier qui leur conviendra… Christine me dit : « on n’a pas le temps » …
j’ai toujours pensé que pour vivre il n’y a presque pas de temps…
Aucun danger… ce ne sont pas des objets qui traitent du relationnel… ce sont des manuscits que nous pourrions donner à nos enfant
